Where I Belong

Have you ever been in the presence of someone who just gets you? Someone who just seems to understand where you’re coming from, no matter what you say or do? It’s as though they know you better than you know yourself. And when you are with them, walls can come down. Masks can be removed. And you are free to be…you.

Oh, how we long to be connected.

Accepted.

The Lord often speaks to me through music and, recently, Cory Asbury’s Where I Belong has been resonating within my heart and spirit.

This song is special to me because I have often felt like an outsider. An outcast. Like I always seem to be on the outside of something, looking in. There…but not actually a part of.

Does that make sense?

I’m not sure if I’ve felt like that because I moved around a lot…or because I’m an introvert…or because a spirit of rejection gripped me for most of my life, causing me to always question my worth. I imagine it is probably a combination of the three.

WHERE I BELONG

Your presence is all I’m longing for here in the secret place
Your nearness is all I’m waiting for here in the quiet place
Here in the secret place

My soul waits for you alone
Like the watchmen wait for dawn
Here I’ve finally found the place
Where we’ll meet, Lord, face to face

I’ve finally found where I belong
I’ve finally found where I belong, in your presence
I’ve finally found where I belong, Lord
To be with you, to be with you

Your presence is all I’m longing for here in the secret place
Your nearness is all I’m waiting for here in the quiet place
Here in the secret place

My soul waits for you alone
Like the watchmen wait for dawn
Here I’ve finally found the place
Where we’ll meet, Lord, face to face

I’ve finally found where I belong
I’ve finally found where I belong, in your presence
I’ve finally found where I belong, Lord
To be with you, to be with you

I am my Beloved’s and He is mine
So come into your garden and take delight in me
Take delight in me

Delight in me, delight in me
Delight in me, delight in me

Here in Your presence, God, I find my rest
Here in Your presence, God

(Artist: Cory Asbury Album: Let Me See Your Eyes)

The secret place.

The quiet place.

The place where anyone, no matter who you are or where you’re from, can come before the Lord…to meet Him, face-to-face. Where walls can come down. Masks can be removed. Where you are truly free to be…you.

The Lord sees you. He sees your heart. He knows your thoughts.

He knows the circumstances you find yourself in. He knows your struggles and your fears. He is able to meet with you in those places and shine the light of His Truth into the darkness and chaos.

He longs for us to come sit before Him. To be still and wait for Him, with expectant hearts.

In His presence, there is no need to pretend, because nothing is hidden. Sin is exposed and repentance comes…along with forgiveness for those sins. In His presence, all else falls away and Truth can come. Healing can come. Faith can come – because all fear is washed away when He is near.

In Him, you can be filled with peace and find rest. In the secret place, you are reminded that you are delighted in. When you are face to face with Him, there can be no doubt of His love for you.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2

How lovely is Your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Psalm 84:1

For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the afflicted ones with salvation. Psalm 149:4

Beloved, I pray that you will sit quietly before the Lord…and wait for Him. That you will seek His presence in the Secret Place.

Because it is where Heaven touches earth.
